Pop Quiz: What is the largest organ in your body?
Locked in your answer?
Answer: Your skin.
It’s crazy what we put our skin through, and it’s not all our fault. For instance, while living in L.A. our skin was a wreck simply because of all the pollution that sits in the air. Our pores couldn’t get a rest; our nightly washing ritual was the equivalent of that scene in Zoolander where Ben Stiller has a trashcan full of dirty cotton balls from trying to clean his skin post a day in the mines. Point is, everything we experience in life shows up on our skin, be it physical, emotional, psychological. And while we aren’t about to give you a post endorsing a specific brand or product (we aren’t Drew Barrymore, we don’t get paid for telling you to wear Lash Blast Mascara) we do have some thoughts about the modern approach to skin care.
First off, you are not Juan Ponce de Leon so stop searching for the Fountain of Youth. No elixirs, balms, crèmes, serums, or bee venom facials are going to undo aging. Besides the whole obsession with youth does have a line, when there are fifty year old women wanting to look thirty that’s when the line has been crossed. To put things in perspective, a fifty year old wanting to look thirty is the equivalent of a twenty-something woman wanting to look like a five year old. Yeah, we think its weird too. We are all about looking good. But let’s not confuse looking fresh and good with looking young. Reduce the fine lines and wrinkles; get that skin soft and dewy but the injections and lasers need to go. Sorry but years of chain smoking and binge drinking take a toll. Lack of hydration and baby oil in the sun add up, and chemical peel or not we still know you’re aging because your lips look like those of a salt-water fish and your cheeks look like a toy doll’s so the jig is up. It’s the joke time plays on us all. All we are saying is, no skin crème or Botox can do what drinking water and getting good rest will do. So take care of your skin, but don’t look for the miracle fix. If you’re young take care of your skin now. And if you’re not as young, it’s never too late to start. Aging is beautiful, and the true trick to youthful glow is being young inside. (Or that is what our smoking hott mother’s tell us, and they have yet to do any crazy beauty regiments, no knives or bat droppings in sight).

A word on Hollywood. Please know that women are Photoshopped within an inch of their lives. Ever seen a magazine cover where the starlet looks like her own doppelganger? Yeah. And of course, this “touch up” happens after hours of extensive make-up. So any professional photo you see is by noImage may be NSFW.
Clik here to view. means a valid measuring stick of beauty, it’s like looking at an Avatar. These include make-up free pics in gossip magazines and tweeted “candids” by stars. Let’s go ahead and say award shows don’t count either, the craziness that goes into all that prepping will eventually go into a memoir. Moving back to skin…
We are big believers in being pampered. And even bigger believers of taking our sweet time. So what’s the rush? Without revealing our own skincare routine, or endorsing a product we do have some pointers that will get you in the right direction.
In a world where we are always on the go, and us ladies are even more so. Women are known for their need to multi-task. But we like to think of our skin regiment as our time, so don’t rush it. Not to be clichéd, but Michelangelo didn’t rush the Sistine Chapel. Use separate products that have specific purposes. Even the most elaborate regiments take 15 minutes tops, and you don’t have to get that fancy. Pick key products that target your skin needs and use them accordingly. If nothing else, spending that extra time will just be relaxing for your.
Next, pick quality products. Now hear us out, we didn’t say expensive. We said quality. Sometimes the most generic products are the best quality, and have the best results. And sometimes, it’s better to buy the more expensive but better item than buying 10 that don’t work and get wasted. If you have sensitive skin, spend more to get something that doesn’t harm it. If you have a super expensive product that doesn’t work, don’t try to make it. For instance: Our go to skin moisturizer is Nivea Skin Cream. Classic, cheap, and literally the best thing we have ever found for lotion.
Your skin is all of you. The face is what we see in the mirror, but it’s just as important to keep the rest of your epidermis all glowy and perfected as well. This is where the pampering comes in, its just as important to take the extra time to tend to every inch of yourself than to cut corners. You’re the person who has to deal with how it makes you look and feel so take the extra time. Pampering doesn’t mean spa though, even though we love a good spa day, there are easy at home ways to keep yourself spa fresh. Our favorite indulgences are Epsom Salt soaks, wearing gloves with lotion to bed to keep our hands soft, and lemon avec sugar as our favorite all natural and effective body exfoliant.
Last, invest in a good primer. We know we spent all the time harping about natural beauty, but primer is like a good illusion at a magic show. It’s Photoshop for real life. We’d be remiss if we didn’t say to stay away from most silicone based primers. Still, pick a good one with SPF to go under your makeup, or better yet in lieu of makeup. Either way, fined a good primer and your skin will thank you.
Bottom line, any of the great beauties in history all had one thing in common, great skin. From Queen Esther and her 6 months of oils and perfumes and 6 months of makeup and cosmetics before meeting the king, all the way to present “It” girl Jennifer Lawrence who showed up at The Great Gatsby premier glowing with fresh barely there makeup skin. Skin is important, and since it’s the largest piece of us, and is the largest thing that people see of us we should spend a little more time on it. After all, they say beauty is only skin deep.
Love you, mean it…
